#0008 – Phyre Phryday V/Blog 02/21/2020 – (ED) Egyptian Drill: Proof Red Oak Coals Are More Than Probable

   02/21/2020 – Our 8th Vlog opens with the Red Oak (ED) Egyptian Drill. I basically destroy a perfectly good reloading (CD) Crutch Drill Spindle and turn it into a smaller (ED) Egyptian Drill. A few months back, some was asking about how to do a HARDER Maple (around 1,500 Janka I think), with (BD) Bow Drill. A lot of advice was given by many. I offered a clear video and explanation of using the (ED) Egyptian Drill instead of being stuck doing “what you know” or “you’re comfortable with,” meaning (BD) Bow Drill.

   When I was demo-ing the (ED) Egyptian Drill in Japan last June 2019, I purposefully made the entire set from Rock/Sugar/Hard Maple (Janka Hardness 1,450, about the same as Oaks…). (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEWe15Zid1I)

   So, here’s the deal, as soon I I get the sense that any wood is getting more than 800-900 Janka Hardness, I’m going to leave (BD) Bow Drill behind and I’m going to change my technology to an (ED) Egyptian Drill.
