#0033 – Phyre Phryday V/Blog 12/25/2020 – (MD) Mouth Drill & (MTD/MBD) Mouth Toggle/Bow Drill: HOMESICK FOR JAPAN!

Hello Global Tribe of PhyreKeepers (GTOP)!

12/25/2020 – Welcome to Phyre Dojo’s 33rd Phyre Phryday Vlog. And… Happy Holidays.

I am INCREDIBLY HOMESICK for Japan, but Japan, as well as a lot of the World, is not letting anyone from the US into their countries, and for legitimate and obvious reasons.

In these videos, I am teaching with TAKU KAWAGUCHI of WILD AND NATIVE (www.WildAndNative.com). https://wildandnative.com/ These are Taku’s students at his bushcraft school where we went over and demonstrated EVERY METHOD IN THE WORLD. On the first day of the Workshop, we did (MD) MOUTH DRILL & (MT/BD) MOUTH TOGGLE/BOW DRILL. And, (MD) Mouth Drill‘s “claim to fame” is that in fact you could do ANY LOW DENSITY (BD) Bow Drill Wood in the World, especially one’s that LOOK LIKE a (HD) Hand Drill, but should NOT be used as a (HD) Hand Drill

The (MD) Mouth Drill Sets here is made COMPLETELY of BOX ELDER (Acer Negundo) & TULIP POPLAR (Liriodendron Tulipifera). The Toggles, Pressure Braces, Reloader Spindles, Reloads and the Hearth! ALL from those materials!

You haven’t lived until you’ve tried to make Phryction Phyre Sets COMPLETELY with the Woods you’re trying to LITE! Can’t wait to make more!

Tulip Poplar (Liriodendron Tulipifera) is a Janka of 540.

Box Elder (Acer Negundo) (a “soft” Maple) is a Janka of 720.

(For comparison, Atlantic White OR Western Red CEDAR (i.e. “Your Cedar (BD) Bow Drill“) is only 350…)

This was the 1st time I demonstrated the S.T.E.A.M. possibilities of Phryction PhyreKeeping at this level overseas.

In Jauary of 2020, at the the LES PRIMITIFS Tribe Workshop I PhyreHacked an even HARDER WOOD with their (MD) Mouth Drill: A wood named HACKBERRY (Celtis Occidentalis) with a Janka of 880!
