BIMONTHLY HIGHLIGHTS PART 2 MEME

HELLO ALL,

IT’S PRETTY OBVIOUS WE’RE HEADING INTO AUTUMN. I LOVE THIS TIME OF CONSTANT CICADA AND CRICKET BUZZINGS AND CHIRPINGS TELLING US THAT WINTER IS COMING SOON. BUT, ENOUGH POETRY…

FIRST, SOME SPECIAL AND PERSONAL THANX

–         TO JASON BECKMAN, WHO SENT ME SOME OF MY FIRST EVER MULEFAT – SEEP WILLOW (BACCHARIS SALICAFOLIA). THERE’S A PHYREHACK COMING SOON!

–         TO SHELLEY STEVENS, FOR SENDING SOME OF MY FIRST EVER FIREWEED (EPILOBIUM ANGUSTIFOLIUM). THERE’S A PHYREHACK COMING SOON! ALSO, A THANX FOR THE YARROW (ACHILLEA MILLEFOLIUM) AND HORSETAIL (EQUISETUM.) YOU’RE A GREAT FRIEND! YOUR JEWELWEED (IMPATIENS CAPENSIS) SEEDS WILL BE COMING SOON. THEY ARE NOW IN FLOWER.

–         TO DOUG SPRINGER AND JASON BOGROFF, FELLOW WILDERNESS SKILLS AND NINJA DUDES. THANX FOR THE DRIED NEW YORK IRONWEED AND SENNA (SENNA). YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME.

–         TO A GREAT NEIGHBOR AND SCOUTMASTER – PHIL FOSS WHO CREATED THIS AWESOME SCROLL SAW CUT WOODWORK FOR PHYRE DOJO!

–         AND THANX TO MANY OTHERS FOR THEIR COMMENTS, SUPPORT.

–         AND, HEARING FROM A GREAT MANY PEOPLE I HAVEN’T HAD THE PRIVILEGE TO HEAR FROM IN A LONG, LONG WHILE…

PHYRE DOJO SCROLLSAW

I’LL START OFF WITH A PRETTY GOOD SHOT (IF I DO SAY SO MYSELF,) OF A CICADA I CAUGHT HANGING OUT ON ONE OF MY COCKLEBUR (XANTHIUM STUMARIUM) THAT I NOTICED AS I WAS INSPECTING THINGS IN MY BACKYARD.

CICADA 001

ANYWAY, BELOW, ON ONE OF MY MANY TRIPS DOWN TO SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY TO SEE ONE OF MY PATIENTS, I GATHERED SOME DEAD YUCCA (YUCCA) STALKS.

YUCCA HARVEST 1

HERE THEY ARE BELOW WITH A SHORT SHOVEL AND CLIPPERS FOR SIZE REFERENCE. I THINK I’LL JUST KEEP A YARD STICK WITH ME FROM NOW ON.

 YUCCA HARVEST 2

HERE ARE THE PROCESSED YUCCA STALKS.

FIVE 24 INCH & TWO 18 INCH STALKS.

THE LONGER TOP ONES ARE THICKER AND ARE MORE SUITABLE

FOR (BD) BOW DRILL TYPE METHODS.

YUCCAS PROCESSED

AS I MENTIONED PREVIOUSLY, I HAVE SOME HORSEWEED (CONYZA CANADENSIS)

GROWING ON MY PROPERTY AS WELL.

HORSEWEEDS 001

SOME OF THE ROUGH RAINSTORMS WE’VE HAD LATELY HERE IN NEW JERSEY HAVE CAUSED SOME OF THE MORE MATURE ONES TO “BOW DOWN.” I WONDER IF THIS IS ONE OF NATURE’S INTENTIONAL WAYS OF PLANT PROCREATION METHODS. THIS KIND OF BEHAVIOR WILL ENSURE A HUGE “TRIBAL” AREA OF HORSEWEEDS BY JUST PLACING THE SEEDS RIGHT DOWN TO THE GROUND.

HORSEWEEDS 002

I NEED TO KEEP THE STALKS FROM STAYING IN THIS BENT POSITION. IF THE STALKS STAY LIKE THIS THEY’LL BE USELESS AS SPINDLES BECAUSE THEIR AXIS’ WILL BE OFF. SO, THEREFORE, AS A COMPROMISE, SINCE I WON’T BE ALLOWING THEM TO GROW BACK IN THIS AREA OF MY PROPERTY ANYWAY, MY WIFE AND I CAREFULLY HARVESTED THE SEEDHEADS WHICH ALLOWS THEM TO STAND BACK UP AGAIN NICE AND STRAIGHT. THE STALK PARTS OF THE SEEDHEADS ARE STILL “GREEN” AND WILL NEED TO DRY OUT CAREFULLY. SO, WE PLACED THEM INTO FIVE LARGE BROWN PAPER LEAF BAGS. I WILL HARVEST THE STALKS LATER.

HORSEWEEDS 003

THESE SEEDHEADS WILL BE USED FOR THE GARDEN NEXT YEAR.

SINCE YUCCA AND HORSEWEEDS ARE “ON THE MENU,” I HAVE DECIDED TO TREAT YOU TO SOME “PRACTICE” VIDEOS ON THE OL’ PHYREDOJO YOUTUBE CHANNEL. I AM WORKING ON SOME VIDEOS TO COMPLETE THE HIDEN DENKI DENSHO. I HAPPENED TO BE WORKING WITH SOME YUCCA AND HORSEWEED (HD) HAND DRILLS. AND, I JUST HAPPENED TO HAVE RECORDED THOSE FOUR SESSIONS. HERE YOU GO:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7BheIrHfNg

IF YOU SHOULD HAVE AND WOULD LIKE TO POST ANY AND ALL COMMENTS ABOUT THE VIDEO – PLEASE DO ON MY YOUTUBE PHYREDOJO CHANNEL ACCOUNT.

A PAIR OF WILD LETTUCES (LACTUCA CANADENSIS) IN MY FRONT YARD HAS STARTED TO GO TO SEED. SINCE IT WAS JUST ABOUT TO DOWNPOUR RAIN, I HARVESTED THESE INTO A BOX AND PUT IT INTO THE SHED FOR DRYING AND STORAGE ALONG WITH THE HORSEWEED SEEDHEADS.

SINCE I HAD TO DEAL WITH MY SON BEING ILL THE TIME I WAS POSTING PART ONE, (DON’T WORRY, HE’S FINE – JUST SOME INDIGESTION IT TURNS OUT) NOT ALL THE POSTINGS WENT OUT TO EVERYONE AT THE SAME TIME. SO, I DIDN’T THINK IT FAIR TO HAVE ONLY ONE PERSON GUESS CORRECTLY. SO, EVERYONE THAT GUESSED CORRECTLY WON A (HD) HAND DRILL KIT.

I AM CURRENTLY WORKING ON ALL OF THEIR (HD) HAND DRILL CHOICES AND KITS TO BE SENT OUT AFTER I MAKE SURE THEY ALL WORK.

RATHER THAN JUST EXPLAIN THE PHYREHACKING, AND SINCE “A VIDEO IS WORTH A MILLION WORDS,” – FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE – HERE IS A

YOUTUBE VIDEO OF THE “PHYREHACKING” OF THE MIMOSA SILK TREE.

I CHOSE THE (MD) MOUTH DRILL METHOD FOR THIS ONE:

PROTECTOR WARRIOR MEME ORIGINAL MISTRAL

“BEHIND THE GUARDRAIL…”

I HAVE BEEN TEACHING AND TRAINING IN MARTIAL ARTS MOST OF MY LIFE.

THE PROTECTION AND DEFENSE OF LIFE IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME.

WE DEFINE “WARRIORSHIP” AS PROTECTING AND DEFENDING LIFE.

ALL LIFE.

I CURRENTLY AM ALSO A CONSULTANT ON HANDLING VIOLENT CONFLICTS IN HEALTHCARE SETTINGS AT

JACK HOBAN’S RESOLUTION GROUP INTERNATIONAL.

http://www.rgi.co/bios/index.php

THIS MONTHLY SECTION TITLED “PROTECTOR – WARRIOR” CONCERNS SOME OF THE WHY, HOW AND WHAT OF WHEN PHRYCTION PHYRE PLANTS DO AND DO NOT ESCAPE DESTRUCTION SHOWING “SAFE AREAS” AS WELL AS THE FALLEN.

BELOW IS, ACTUALLY, PART OF THE FRONT OF MY HOUSE. THIS PLACE HAD SOME MATURE SOW THISTLES (SONCHUS ARVENSIS,) AND SOME PILEWORT (ERECHTITES HIERACIFOLIA) TILL SOMEBODY WENT BY AND “CLEANED IT UP.”

I TRIED TO SALVAGE A FEW PILEWORTS, BUT THE SOW THISTLES, WHICH WERE THE ONES I REALLY WANTED WERE HISTORY.

WARRIOR 001

BELOW IS A PART OF A GOLF COURSE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT THAT I PASS REGULARLY WHEN VISITING RELATIVES. YOU’RE LOOKING AT A PLACE THAT HAD SOME AWESOME DOGBANES (APOCYNUM CANNABINUM.) YOU CAN SEE ONE PATCH JUST SURVIVED BECAUSE THEY WEREN’T EASY TO GET TO DUE TO OTHER STRUCTURES.

WARRIOR 002

BELOW SHOWS  WHY AND HOW THESE SURVIVED.

WARRIOR 003

BELOW IS JUST A FEW OF THE MANY STUBS LEFT BEHIND AS PROOF THEY WERE ONCE THERE.

 WARRIOR 004

WARRIOR 005

“LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION”

WHAT’S AMAZING TO ME IS WHEN THE HUMAN MIND LEARNS SOMETHING – IT BEGINS TO SEE IT EVERYWHERE.

EVER SINCE I GOT MY FIRST REAL LOOK AT SIZEABLE, MATURE AND FLOWERING

NEW YORK IRONWEED

(VERNONIA NOVEBORACENSIS) AT THE

BOWMAN’S HILL WILDFLOWER PRESERVE

LOCATED IN NEW HOPE, PA,

I SEE IT (ALMOST) EVERYWHERE.

(IN SUPPORT AND THANX TO BOWMAN’S HILL, THEY ARE HAVING THEIR ANNUAL FALL PLANT SALE STARTING SEPT 7TH. CHECK IT OUT.)

IT’S AMAZING HOW I NEVER “NOTICED” IT’S DISTINCT AND SHOWY PURPLE FLOWER TOPS. I WILL GIVE MYSELF A BREAK AND SAY THAT THERE REALLY AREN’T MANY TO SAY THEY’RE PLENTIFUL. AND, IT IS A VERY SHORT TIME WINDOW OF THEM FLOWERING IN AUGUST, OTHERWISE I WOULDN’T HAVE SEEN THEM ANYWAY. AND, TO ADD TO THAT, THEIR ECOSYSTEM TO BE FOUND IS IN REALLY UNDISTURBED MOIST AREAS…

WHICH IS ALSO WHY THIS IS IN THE PROTECTOR – WARRIOR SECTION. MOWERS AND SPRAYERS DON’T GO NEAR THESE AREAS MUCH AT ALL, AND THEREFORE THEY ESCAPE UNNECESSARY DESTRUCTION.

BELOW, HERE ARE SOME I FOUND ON THE MEDIAN BEFORE EXIT 4 ON ROUTE 295 NORTH. I COLLECTED ONLY THE ONES THAT WERE BIG ENOUGH FOR (HD) HAND DRILLS AND LEFT THE OTHER HALF.

I NEVER TAKE OUT AN ENTIRE TRIBE.

I ALWAYS LEAVE AT LEAST HALF. THEY ARE TOO FAR BACK IN THE MEDIAN TO WARRANT MOWING.

WARRIOR 006

BELOW, THESE ARE HARDER TO SEE BECAUSE THESE NY IRONWEEDS ARE MIXED IN WITH CORN STALKS! YOU CAN SEE THE MOWING WHICH JUST TOOK PLACE IN FRONT OF THIS NORTHBOUND SIDE OF ROUTE 31 IN THE AMWELL AREA.

WARRIOR 007

BELOW HERE IS ANOTHER VIEW FACING NORTH.

I NEVER WOULD HAVE SEEN THESE GROWING IN WITH THE CORN IF THEY HADN’T HAD MOWED. I LEARNED A LOT FROM THIS IN THAT YOU’LL NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU’LL FIND UNLESS YOU REALLY LOOK. HERE I TOOK ONLY A HANDFUL THICK ENOUGH FOR (HD) HAND DRILLS.

WARRIOR 008

BELOW, THIS WAS AN INTERESTING FIND. I WOULD JUST CATCH A GLIMPSE OF THE PURPLE ON THE SOUTHBOUND SIDE OF ROUTE 31 AS I DROVE NORTH. THIS IS THE EDGE OF A PARKING LOT OF A BUILDING IN THE AMWELL AREA. I TOOK TWO THAT HAD SIZEABLE STEM STALKS FOR (HD) HAND DRILLS. YOU CAN’T SEE, BUT THEY WERE GROWING OUT OF THE MIDDLE OF A PILE OF BRUSH. SO, THEY REALLY WERE PROTECTED.

WARRIOR 009

BELOW, AS I WAS DRIVING BY THIS AREA, I REALISED I WAS NEAR A WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA AND FISHING POND. I MADE A SPLIT DECISION TO PULL IN AND SEE IF THERE WOULD BE SOME BACK THERE. ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS I SAW WAS THIS GUY ALONG WITH A GREAT BLUE HERON.

WARRIOR 010

AND, AS YOU CAN SEE BELOW, I HIT THE JACKPOT!

I ONLY COLLECTED A HANDFUL.

WARRIOR 011

WARRIOR 012

AS I TOOK A QUICK LOOK AROUND IN THE BACK AREA, I CAME ACROSS THIS BONESET (EUPATORIUM PERFOLIATUM.) OTHER THAN MY RECENT VISIT TO BOWMAN’S HILL WILDFLOWER PRESERVE, I HADN’T SEEN ONE OF THESE IN ABOUT TWENTY YEARS. I DID NOT HARVEST THIS, I LEFT IT. (BESIDES, IT WAS TOO THIN FOR (HD) HAND DRILL ANYWAY…)

WARRIOR 013

ANYWAY, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE NEW YORK IRONWEED FOR YOURSELF, YOU CAN GO HERE. THEY’RE RIGHT THERE IN THE PARKING LOT.

WARRIOR 014

BELOW, AS I WAS ON MY WAY HOME THINKING I WAS DONE WITH MY SCOUTING AND HARVESTING, I CAUGHT THESE OUT OF THE CORNER OF MY EYE ON NORTHBOUND ROUTE 31 IN FLEMINGTON NJ OVER BY THE SONIC FAST FOOD JOINT. I IMMEDIATELY TURNED AROUND AND COLLECTED THE HALF THAT WERE LARGE ENOUGH.

WARRIOR 015

BELOW, ARE A PAIR GROWING IN A FIELD ON ONE OF THE CORNERS OF VAN SYCKELS ROAD NEAR WHERE I LIVE. I LEFT THEM ALONE – BECAUSE THEY WERE.

WARRIOR 016

BELOW IS MY HARVEST. I LEFT THEM TO DRY A LITTLE IN THE SUN FOR THE DAY.

WARRIOR 017

BELOW IS AN EXAMPLE OF ONE THAT WAS COLLECTED WITH AND WITHOUT ROOM TO THEMSELVES. THE ONE ON THE LEFT SHOWS SPREADING AND THE ONE ON THE RIGHT DOES NOT. THE ONES AN THE RIGHT ARE MORE PREFERABLE FOR PHRYCTION PHYRE STALK SPINDLES. I WILL BE KEEPING THIS IN MIND WITH THE GARDEN NEXT YEAR. THIS IS A CLASSIC THING THAT HAPPENS WITH EVENING PRIMROSE (OENOTHERA BIENNIS) IF YOU LOOK.

WARRIOR 018

AND, HERE ARE THE PROCESSED HARVESTS AT THE END OF THE DAY. TWENTY 24 INCH STALKS AND NINE 18 INCH STALKS. SCORE!! HOPEFULLY THE FLOWER HEADS WILL TURN TO SEED AS THEY DRY. I PUT THEM AWAY IN THE SHED ALONG WITH THE BUNDLED SPINDLES.

WARRIOR 019

THE WARRIOR CREED
By Dr. Robert L. Humphrey

Wherever I walk,
everyone is a little bit safer because I am there.

Wherever I am,
anyone in need has a friend.

Whenever I return home,
everyone is happy I am there.

“It’s a better life!”

PRESERVER HEALER MEME WRITING

“But I’ve been there

and if I can survive
I can keep you alive
I’m not above going through it again”

– BILLY JOEL

I HAVE ONLY BEEN A REGISTERED NURSE SINCE 2005. BEFORE THAT I WAS A WILDERNESS EMT.

THE PRESERVATION AND SAVING OF LIFE IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME.

ONE OF MY GREATEST PRIVILEGES WAS TO BE A TRIAGE NURSE. IN TRIAGE THERE IS A CLEAR DEFINITION THAT ALL LIFE IS OF EQUAL VALUE. YOU ONLY THEN HAD TO DECIDE WHO NEEDED HELP THE SOONEST AND THE MOST.

THIS MONTHLY SECTION TITLED “PRESERVER – HEALER” CONCERNS SOME OF THE WHY, HOW AND WHAT OF WHEN NATURE REBOUNDS AND PHRYCTION PHYRE PLANTS CAN NOT JUST BE ALIVE, BUT LIVE.

THIS GREAT BURDOCK (ARCTIUM LAPPA) IS IN ITS FIRST YEAR AS A BIENNIAL. NEXT YEAR IT WOULD SHOOT UP A STALK BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO DO THAT NEXT YEAR AS IT IS GROWING IN A SPACE BETWEEN THE DRIVEWAY AND CONCRETE FOUNDATION OF MY GARAGE I’M GOING TO DO MY BEST TO FREE IT AND TRANSPLANT IT. BUT RIGHT NOW IT LOOKS GREAT.

PRESERVER BURDOCK DRIVEWAY

BELOW ARE SOME SHOTS OF AN AREA A MILE FROM MY HOUSE. THIS IS THE DIRT FOUNDATION OF A FARM HOUSE THAT WAS LEVELED BACK IN MAY OF THIS YEAR. IT IS NOW THE HOME TO A TRIBE OF FABULOUS VELVETLEAF (ABUTILON THEOPHRASTI.) I’M USING THE KIDS FOR SIZE REFERENCE. IN MY MIND, I KNOW IT’S THE END OF SUMMER WHEN THE VELVETLEAF ARE GOING TO SEED WITH THEIR “REESE’S PEANUT BUTTER CUP” PODS.

VELVETLEAF 01

VELVETLEAF 02

BELOW, YOU CAN SEE SOME OF THE LEVELED HOUSE IN A PILE IN THE BACKGROUND FROM THIS ANGLE.

VELVETLEAF 03

I CAN’T WAIT TO HARVEST THESE LATER. IT’S AMAZING HOW FAST THESE TOOK OVER.

VELVETLEAF 04

FINALLY, THIS IS OUTSIDE MY SUNROOM (PHYRE DOJO.) I HAVE TO SAY, THIS IS A FAIRLY INCREDIBLE COLLECTION OF PHRYCTION PHYRE PLANTS IN ONE PLACE. DO YOU KNOW WHY???

THIS IS WHERE I PROCESS A LOT OF MY HARVESTS AND THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREDIBLE SCATTERING OF SEEDS OF ALL THE PLANTS IN THIS SMALL AREA. THERE ARE VELVETLEAF, SMARTWEED, POISON HEMLOCK, THISTLES, AMARANTHS, LAMB’S QUARTERS, COCKLEBUR, SNEEZEWEED… ONLY TO NAME SOME…

BIMONTHLY HIGHLIGHTS PART 2 ORIGINAL

EPIMETHEI MEME MISTRAL WRITING

TO FOLLOW UP FROM PART ONE’S PROMETHEI, PROMETHEUS, THE FAMOUS HUMANITY CHAMPIONING, GREEK TITAN MYTHOLOGICAL CHARACTER WHOSE NAME MEANS “FORETHOUGHT,” HAD A BROTHER NAMED EPIMETHEUS, WHOSE NAME, OF COURSE, MEANS – “AFTERTHOUGHT” – TO WHICH THIS SECTION IS NAMED AFTER.

I MENTIONED THAT WE SHOULD NEVER STRAY (TOO FAR) FROM THE ORIGINAL FUNCTION OF PHRYCTION PHYREKEEPING… ETHICALLY SUPPORTING LIFE. AND SO, THEREFORE, I HAVE AND WILL BE INCLUDING THESE SECTIONAL TOPICS IN ALL OF MY POSTINGS PARTS ONE AND TWO. IN FIFTEEN DAYS, I’M EXCITED THAT WE START AGAIN WITH SUBJECTS 1 – 5, WHICH MEANS A NEW CRITICAL THINKING SCOUTING MISSION OF “WHAT PLANT – TREE IS THIS?” A NEW “PHYREHACK.” EACH MONTH I WILL BE SHOWING ON VIDEO A NEW MATERIAL THAT I’VE NEVER DONE BEFORE. SHOWING THE THINGS I’VE ENCOUNTERED, LEARNED AND AM WILLING TO TRANSMIT. THAT IS MY MISSION. SO, WHAT DID YOU DO THIS MONTH?

GAMBARIMASHO YO – JAPANESE FOR “LET’S KEEP GOING!”

FUNDRAISER_PACKET

I HAVE COMPLETED THE FIRST DRAFT OF PHYRE DOJO’S 50/50 FUNDRAISER BOOKLET. WHAT IS IT? IF YOUR GROUP (I.E. BOY SCOUTS, GIRL SCOUTS, PLANT NURSERY, NATURE CENTER, ETC.) WILL HOST PHYRE DOJO FOR A SKILLS DEMONSTRATION AT YOUR FACILITY USING YOUR EMAIL LIST, WE’LL SPLIT THE COLLECTION 50/50. BOOKLET SUBJECT TO CHANGE AND WILL KEEP EVOLVING. IT TELLS A LITTLE ABOUT ME, WHAT I DEMONSTRATE, AND WHAT WE NEED TO DO TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.
