PHYREKEEPER OPENING MEME

BIMONTHLY HIGHLIGHTS PART 2 MEME

HELLO ALL,

GOLDENRODS TO THE LEFT OF ME,

GOLDENRODS TO THE RIGHT OF ME,

GOLDENRODS IN FRONT OF ME,

MY ALLERGIES THEN THUNDERED…

*********************************************************

I WAS HOSTED AND HAD A GREAT TIME WITH SOUTH BRUNSWICK CUB SCOUT PACK 108.

I SPENT AN HOUR DEMONSTRATING THE

“PRIMAL 8 BASICS.”

I USUALLY GIVE OUT STICKERS THAT HAVE MY CONTACT INFO THAT THE SCOUTS CAN PLACE INSIDE THEIR HANDBOOKS AND MANUALS SO THAT IF THEY HAVE A PHRYCTION PHYRE QUESTION THEY CAN REACH ME.

AND, I USUALLY GIVE OUT SOME PHYRE DOJO BRANDED RATTAN “COINS” AT THE END OF MY DEMOS.

PACK108-01

MY SON WANTED TO COME ALONG, BUT HE WAS DOING A COMMUNITY DAY WITH HIS OWN

BOY SCOUT TROOP AT THAT SAME TIME. BUT, MY DAUGHTER BEGGED TO COME ALONG.

PACK108-02

SHE WAS – SURPRISINGLY, WELL BEHAVED…

PACK108-03

FOLLOWING THE DEMO, THE SCOUTMASTERS LIT THEIR CAMPPHYRE WITH THE

(PD) PUMP DRILL METHOD WHICH THEY HAD JUST SEEN.

READY TO PREPARE LUNCH AS SOON AS IT GETS DOWN TO A BED OF COALS!

PACK108-04

**************************************************************************

WHILE DRIVING MY KIDS BACK FROM SOMEWHERE, WE PASSED ONE OF MANY CORNFIELDS.

THIS ONE HAD SOME TALLER AND THINNER HYBRID CORN-LESS CORNSTALKS

GROWING ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE FIELD.

CORN-01

I QUICKLY HARVESTED SOME AND TOOK THEM HOME TO PROCESS.

CORN-02

CORN-03

I CUT THEM INTO POTENTIAL “RELOADS” AND (BD) BOW DRILL SPINDLES.

I SET THEM ASIDE TO DRY. WE’LL SEE IF WE CAN DO SOMETHING WITH THESE LATER.

CORNSTALKS ARE USUALLY VERY OVAL IN THEIR CROSS-SECTION SHAPE.

THESE WERE, SURPISINGLY, MORE CYLINDRICAL. WE’LL SEE…

CORN-04

PHYREHACK OF THE MONTH MEME

WHEN IT COMES TO PHRYCTION PHYREKEEPING, THIS IS WHAT I LIVE FOR… THE DISCOVERY.

THE NEW POSSIBILITIES. I’VE GOT THREE NEW PHYREHACKS FOR YOU!

SO, IT’S NO SURPRISE (TO ME) THAT NO ONE REALLY GOT THE “PHYREQUEST” PUZZLE OF THE MONTH.

I COULDN’T EVEN FIGURE OUT WHAT IT WAS. I JUST KEPT LOOKING AND LOOKING UNTIL I BASICALLY CAME ACROSS IT BY ACCIDENT AS TO WHAT IT WAS:

SWAMP ROSE MALLOW

(HIBISCUS MOSCHEUTOS)

005

*********************************************************

SO, THERE ARE A FEW PLACES ALONG RT. 295 AND RT. 31 IN NEW JERSEY WHERE I’VE SEEN

SWAMP ROSE MALLOW GROWING WILD.

I STOPPED AT ONE OF THE PLACES ALONG RT. 31 TO HARVEST SOME. THE FLOWERS HAD ALREADY GONE TO SEED.

BELOW HERE, I’VE SEPARATED THE SEED-HEAD TOPS ON THE RIGHT

FROM THE FRESH STALKS IN THE MIDDLE AND SOME OLD ONES ON THE LEFT.

SRM-01

THE SEED-HEAD TOPS.

SRM-02

THE STALKS.

SRM-03

BELOW HERE, I’VE PROCESSED THE 2 FT. LONG STALKS INTO SPINDLES

AND SEPARATED THE SEED-HEADS FROM THE TOPS.

SRM-04

NOW, JUST LIKE A COOKING SHOW, I PUT AWAY THE PREPARED PRODUCTS “INTO THE OVEN” (PUT THEM IN THE SHED.) AND THEN, I TAKE OUT THE “FINISHED AND COOKED PRODUCT OUT OF ANOTHER OVEN.”

SO, HERE I TAKE A FEW STALKS I HARVESTED A TWO MONTHS EARLIER AND BEGIN TO PREPARE THEM.

SRM-05

BELOW, ARE TWO (HD) HAND DRILL SPINDLES READY TO GO

ALONG WITH SOME “RELOADS” OR (BD) BOW DRILL SPINDLES.

I ALSO SEPARATED SOME OF THE OUTER BARK CORDAGE FROM ONE OF THE STALKS.

I AM MOST SURPRISED AT HOW CLOSE SWAMP ROSE MALLOW IS LIKE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF

VELVETLEAF (ABUTILON THEOPHRASTI.)

SRM-06

PHYRE DOJO IS ABOUT BUILDING SKILLS – NOT JUST DISCUSSING PHRYCTION PHYREKEEPING.

RATHER THAN JUST EXPLAIN THE PHYREHACKING, AND SINCE “A VIDEO IS WORTH A MILLION WORDS,” – FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE – HERE IS A YOUTUBE VIDEO OF THE “PHYREHACKING” OF THE SWAMP ROSE MALLOW…

************************************************

http://youtu.be/gzV_43lgJbA

*************************************************

SO, A FELLA NAMED JASON BECKMAN, SENT ME SOME OF MY FIRST EVER

MULEFAT – SEEP WILLOW (BACCHARIS SALICAFOLIA) SINCE I AM LOOKING TO DO MORE “WEST COAST” MATERIALS I CAN’T READILY GET AHOLD OF.

MULEFAT-01

MULEFAT-02

I QUICKLY PREPARE AND SHAPE THE SPINDLE AND BASE ON THE BAND SAW AND BELT SANDER.

TOTAL TIME 5 MINUTES.

MULEFAT-03

THERE’S MY FIRST EVER PHYREHACK DONE AS A (BD) BOW DRILL.

SEE THE VIDEO ON PHYRE DOJO’S YOUTUBE CHANNEL:

*******************************************************************

SO, SHELLEY STEVENS, THANX FOR SENDING SOME OF MY FIRST EVER FIREWEED (EPILOBIUM ANGUSTIFOLIUM).

HERE ARE THE PREPARED (HD) HAND DRILL STALK SPINDLES.

THE WARRIOR CREED
By Dr. Robert L. Humphrey

Wherever I walk,
everyone is a little bit safer because I am there.

Wherever I am,
anyone in need has a friend.

Whenever I return home,
everyone is happy I am there.

“It’s a better life!”

****************************************************************

WE LIVE NEAR THE MUSCONETCONG RIVER. WE HAVE TO DRIVE PAST IT ON THE WAY TO SOME OF MY SON’S FUNCTIONS ONCE IN A WHILE. I HAPPENED TO SPY SOME LARGE GOLDENRODS (SOLIDAGO.) BUT THEN, I NOTICED SOME OTHER THINGS. SO, I PULLED OVER…

IN THE BRIARS ON THE LEFT…

MUSKY-900-06

ARE GROWING SOME WILD LETTUCES (LACTUCA CANADENSIS) STRAIGHT UP IN THE BRIARS.

(BRIGHT GREEN)

MUSKY-900-05

MUSKY-900-04

I COULD ONLY GET A FEW.

BUT, THERE WERE A FEW OTHER THINGS NEARBY TO HARVEST AS WELL…

MUSKY-900-01

MUSKY-900-02

SO, WHAT DID I GET??

(FROM TOP TO BOTTOM)

BOX ELDER (ACER NEGUNDO) THREE -2 FOOT LONG STALKS

EVENING PRIMROSE (OENOTHERA BIENNIS) THREE – 2 FOOT LONG STALKS

AND THE REST ARE DIFFERENT SIZES OF THE WILD LETTUCES (LACTUCA CANADENSIS.)

I ONLY TOOK A FEW OF THEM AND LET MOST OF THEM.

(NOT SHOWN ARE THE TWO GOLDENRODS I ALSO HARVESTED AND PROCESSED.)

MUSKY-900-03

****************************************************************

ALL SUMMER I HAVE BEEN DRIVING PAST THESE YELLOW MOTH MULLEINS

(VERBASCUM BLATTARIA) WHICH HAVE GONE TO SEED. LUCKILY,

THEY WERE NEVER MOWED OR POISONED.

MOTH-MULLEIN-900-01

SCORE!

(I TOOK HALF AND LEFT THE REST.)

PRESERVER HEALER MEME WRITING

REMEMBER WHEN I HARVESTED THESE GREAT BURDOCK (ARCTIUM LAPPA) LEAFSTALKS TO SEE IF I COULD DO SOMETHING WITH THEM…?

PRESERVER BURDOCK DRIVEWAY

BURDOCK 02

WELL… HERE’S WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE NOW AFTER DRYING… THEY’RE USELESS EXCEPT FOR KINDLING.

THEY WERE TOO SUCCULENT TO BE STABLE  ENOUGH TO DO PHRYCTION PHYREKEEPING WITH.

LEARNED SOMETHING…

BURDOCK-LEAFSTALKS-900

BUT, SINCE THIS IS THE “PRESERVER – HEALER” SECTION, HERE’S THE BURDOCK TODAY!

SURVIVOR!

REMEMBER WHEN I SHOWED YOU THIS MOWED SECTION OF GOLF COURSE WITH THE DOGBANES (APOCYNUM CANNABINUM)?

EPIMETHEI MEME MISTRAL WRITING

IN THE LAST PHYREKEEPER’S PROMETHEI, I MENTIONED A

MOTIVATIONAL AND INSPIRATIONAL LINE FROM A MOVIE:

“WHAT ONE MAN CAN DO, ANOTHER CAN DO!”

SIR ANTHONY HOPKINS FROM THE MOVIE – “THE EDGE”

*********************************************

WHEN I USED TO TEACH AT A LARGE AND WELL KNOWN NATURE SCHOOL,

I USED TO TEACH “INTRO TO FIREMAKING.” IT WAS DURING THIS TALK THAT I USED TO MENTION THAT –

PHYREKEEPING IS NOT JUST A COMPLETE SKILL IN ITSELF.

IF YOU’RE GOING TO DO PHRYCTION PHYREMAKING

COMPLETELY PRIMITIVELY,

IT REQUIRES FOUR OTHER SKILLS.

1) PLANT & TREE (& GRASS) IDENTIFICATION SKILLS

2) CORDAGE MAKING SKILLS

3) WOODWORKING SKILLS

4) STONE TOOL MAKING SKILLS

THERE ARE MANY TIMES IN LIFE WHERE IF YOU ARE GOING TO LEARN ONE THING, YOU PROBABLY ALSO HAVE TO PRACTICE OR TRY TO MASTER OTHER CO-EXISTING SKILLS AS WELL.

FOR EXAMPLE, IT’S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO DO WEBPAGES WITHOUT ALSO DOING

PHOTOSHOP, FORMATTING TEXT, ARRANGING SOCIAL MEDIA, ETC, ETC,.

THE TRICK IS: KEEP GOING. AND THEN, AFTER THAT, KEEP GOING!

SO, WHAT DID YOU DO THIS MONTH?

GAMBARIMASHO YO – JAPANESE FOR “LET’S KEEP GOING!”

PHYREKEEPER SCHEDULE MEME 900P

Saturday, January 25th, 2014  1pm-3pm
Bowman’s Hill WildFlower Preserve in New Hope, PA

“From Friendly Flowers to Friction Fire”

Native Plants and WildFlowers are great to enjoy in the warmer times of the year. Many of us are aware that many of them have benefits to humanity by also being edible as well as medicinal. But, what about the long winter months? What knowledge and experience can we acquire from standing skeletons? There is also a long forgotten utilitarian use – the science and art of Friction Firemaking. Obviously, the creation and control of Fire was necessary for our thriving across the globe. Join us for a two hour demonstration given by Joseph Lau of every known Friction Fire method from around the world with specimens that are found all around us.

Hands-on experience following demo and handouts.

I ALWAYS BRING A BUCKET OF EVERY (HD) HAND DRILL MATERIAL I HAVE EVER DONE.

MOST OF THE (HD) HAND DRILLS IN THE BUCKET ARE THE ORIGINAL ONES I FIRST “PHYREHACKED.”

SO, NOW, I GET TO ADD AT LEAST TWO MORE TO “THE BUCKET” FOR DISPLAY…

THE SWAMP ROSE MALLOW (HIBISCUS MOSCHEUTOS)

& THE FIREWEED (CHAMERION ANGUSTIFOLIUM.)

FIRST, I PRINT OFF SOME PHOTOS OF WHAT THE STALKS LOOK LIKE IN FULL BLOOM.

BUCKET-02

I PUNCH HOLES IN THE PHOTOS AND RUBBER BAND ATTACH THEM TO THE STALKS.

BUCKET-03

THEN I ADD THEM TO THE DISPLAY BUCKET FOR MY DEMOS & WORKSHOPS.
