PHYREKEEPER #0007 – PART ONE FOR 10/15/2013 TUESDAY

PHYREKEEPER TITLE PIC

PHYREKEEPER OPENING MEME

PHYREKEEPER PROMETHEI 300W

Close to a million years ago, our ancestors began to control Phyre. It first began as capturing Phyre for its uses. Then, through our slowing increasing intelligences, we starting to figure out its creation through Phryction. Thus began the universe of Phryction PhyreKeeping. The tribes that had the ability to create Phyre thrived. PhyreKeeping was one one of many Life Supporting skills, but all based on being able to adapt in order to keep Life and to Live. The Phyre Dojo was also born out of such circumstances.

Anyway, the 70 Disc DVD media set called the HIDEN DENKI DENSHO is close to being completed. It’s been over three years since I began the storyboarding and started filming and editing this never-before-done project. Truth is, when I first started it I thought it might be 10 discs at the most. Boy, was I off… It took on a life of its own and has gone farther than I first imagined. As a gift in this publication, in the PROVIDER – HUNTER/GATHERER where we go over skills, I give you a scene from the (BD) Bow Drill section of the HIDEN DENKI DENSHO. Enjoy!

Since then, there have many other projects I have considered doing after this one is done. Plus, I wonder what I would do with the time opened up after it’s finished (other than more time with the family.) But, there are some things that I will always come back to for grounding – education, wilderness skills, martial arts and healthcare. Profiling, Providing, Protecting and Preserving Life & Living.

Also, in order to test some Darwinism – Natural Selection, I’ve made some changes by creating additional names for my sections in order to help them grow. As well as broadening the social media outlets which you will find later below. This whole Phyre Dojo/PhyreKeeper project is a brand new species in the world. Let’s see how it adapts and survives.

And, this will be the last BIMONTHLY PhyreKeeper. Starting in November, all of it’s parts will be combined into one Monthly publication at the end of each month.

Gambarimasho Yo! Let’s Keep Going!

PHYREKEEPER HIGHLIGHTS PART 1-800WNEW

I harvested from mainly three places these past two weeks.

One, was a playground park near where we live that is bordered by cornfields and woods called Heritage Park.

Another, was some places along the roads and highways for one species in particular.

The last, was the south side of an underpass along Rt.295 near Trenton, NJ also for one species.

1) HERITAGE PARK

ONE DAY, I WENT BY MYSELF TO THIS PARK, (I WAS FAR ENOUGH AWAY FROM THE PLAYGROUND TO NOT BE VERY SUSPICIOUS). I GATHERED SOME MORE ELDERBERRY, MULLEINS, WILD LETTUCES, GIANT RAGWEEDS, BOX ELDER AND A BULL THISTLE.

AMERICAN ELDERBERRY (SAMBUCUS CANADENSIS)

BELOW IS THE SHRUB FROM WHICH I COLLECTED. IN THE LEFT FOREGROUND IS A POKEWEED.

3) SWAMP ROSE MALLOWS

MONTHS AGO, WHEN THESE HAD THOSE HUGE BLOSSOMS, THIS SMALL TRIBE OF SWAMP ROSE MALLOWS (AND LAST MONTH’S PHYREQUEST CHALLENGE) I WROTE DOWN WHERE THEY WERE SO THAT WHEN THE BLOSSOMS WERE GONE I COULD STILL LOCATE THEM. I DRIVE PAST THESE 6 DAYS A WEEK BUT IT’S USUALLY NIGHT TIME SO I CAN’T SEE THEM THAT WELL. HERE, THE SEED HEADS ARE STILL ON THEM.

LAST MONTH’S PHYREQUEST CHALLENGE WAS REALLY… WELL, CHALLENGING.

SO, I’M GOING TO MAKE IT A LITTLE EASIER (I THINK), BUT WITH A TWIST.

WE’RE GOING TO DO TWO PHYREQUEST PUZZLES.

“WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?” YOU ASK…

THE FIRST PERSON TO GIVE ME THE LATIN NAMES OF BOTH OF THESE… WINS A –

COUNCILPHYRE

I SEE NOW THAT I REALLY NEED TO FOCUS ON EDUCATING MAINLY THE YOUNGER GENERATIONS. YOU KNOW THAT SAYING, “YOU CAN’T TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS.” I HAVE PERSONALLY FOUND THAT AS MUCH AS ADULTS “APPRECIATE” THE PHRYCTION PHYRE SKILLS DEMOS AND WORKSHOPS, IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE MAJORITY OF THEM WILL NEVER TRY, PRACTICE OR TRAIN IN PHYREKEEPING. HOWEVER, THE YOUNG HAVE THE TIME, ENERGY AND WONDER TO WANT TO DO IT. AND, IT’S PROBABLY BEST I FOCUS THE MOST ON THOSE WHO WILL. I HAVE ALWAYS HAD THIS RULE – IF YOU SHOW UP TO LEARN, I AM THERE TO TEACH.

GAMBARIMASHO YO! LET’S KEEP GOING!

PHYREKEEPER PROVIDER MEME 300WNEW

IN THIS PUBLICATION OF THE PHYREKEEPER, YOU SEE THAT I HAD RECENTLY HARVESTED A LOT OF GOLDENROD (SOLIDAGO.) I THOUGHT I MIGHT GIVE YOU A TASTE OF WHAT CAN BE DONE WITH A PLANT IN REGARDS TO A (BD) BOW DRILL. SO HERE, I PRESENT TO YOU –

ATLANTIC WHITE CEDAR BASE (BD) BOW DRILL SET

MY HARVESTING KIT & TECHNIQUES

WITH SOME ASSISTANCE FROM MY DAUGHTER, ALEXA, I PRESENT TO YOU THE THINGS THAT I BRING WITH ME WHEN I’M HARVESTING PHRYCTION PHYRE MATERIALS. IN FACT, THESE THINGS ARE ALWAYS IN THE TRUCK ALL THE TIME. SOMETIMES, I HAVE SPONTANEOUS MOMENTS OF COLLECTING BECAUSE THE TIMING IS RIGHT.

BELOW, ARE TWO DOWELS SIZES THAT I KEEP ON MY PERSON FOR WHEN IT COMES TO (HD) HAND DRILL SPINDLE SELECTION. I ONLY REALLY TAKE THESE OUT AFTER MY “SECOND TRIAGE” WHICH IS WHEN I’M PROCESSING THEM AT HOME. (PHOTO IN BACKGROUND IS NOT TO SCALE. THIS IS ONLY TO REMIND ME OF DRILL BIT SIZES.) THE DOWELS ARE LINED UP WITH THEIR RESPECTIVE SIZES ON THIS PICTURE.

I KNOW THAT I CAN SPIN ANY STALK SPINDLE THAT IS FROM 3/8 THS TO 1/2 INCH IN DIAMETER.

(ALSO FROM 10 MM TO 12 MM.)

PK 101413 MON 050-900

I ALWAYS HAVE WITH ME A FIVE GALLON BUCKET. THIS CAN BE FOR SEED HEAD COLLECTION

AS WELL AS SMALL MATERIAL COLLECTION.

(BELOW, IS A PREVIEW OF PART TWO’S HARVEST OF SOME STAGHORN SUMAC (RHUS TYPHINA.)

PK 101413 MON 053-900

ALEXA MODELS MY TWO KINDS OF HAND CLIPPERS – ONE SCISSOR TYPE AND ONE ANVIL TYPE. DIFFERENT MATERIALS CAN REQUIRE DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES OF COLLECTION. I USUALLY USE THESE FOR TWO REASONS – THE BASES OF THE PLANTS OR SAPLINGS ARE THIN ENOUGH TO CLIP AND I USE THEM TO LOP OFF THE TOPS THAT I DON’T NEED OR TO CUT OFF SEED HEADS FOR COLLECTION.

ALSO, SHE SITS NEXT TO MY TARP WHICH I WILL LAY OUT IN BACK TO NOT ONLY MAKE REMOVAL OF THE MATERIALS EASIER FROM THE TRUCK, BUT IT KEEPS MY TRUCK CLEANER AND COLLECTS ANY AND ALL SEEDS THAT SCATTER AND FALL EVERYWHERE. AND, LET ME TELL YOU – THEY DO!

PK 101413 MON 056-900

HERE, ALEXA SHOWS MY UTILITY KNIVES. BOTH HAPPEN TO BE COLD STEEL BRAND.

THESE ARE FOR WHEN THE BASES ARE TOO THICK FOR THE HAND CLIPPERS. I USE AN QUICK, ANGULAR SLICE/CHOP MOTION. I ALSO USE THEM TO QUICKLY CLEAR BRANCHES AND LEAVES OFF OF THE STALKS RIGHT THERE AND THEN.

(DISCRECTION IS VERY IMPORTANT IN PUBLIC! YOU DON’T WANT LAW ENFORCEMENT TO BE CALLED ON YOU FOR “SOMEONE BRANDISHING A KNIFE!)

PK 101413 MON 057-900

PRACTICING MY NINJA SKILLS!

BELOW, ALEXA MODELS MY ORANGE SAFETY VEST WHICH MAKES ME LOOK MORE “OFFICIAL” AND AROUSES LESS SUSPICION. REMEMBER, “INVISIBILITY IS SYNONYOMUS WITH SURVIVAL.” I MEAN, OF COURSE THAT GUY IS LEGIT ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. HE HAS AN ORANGE SAFETY VEST ON. RIGHT?

PK 101413 MON 059-900

ALEXA SHOWS MY LARGE BROWN PAPER BAGS WHICH ARE FOR REALLY “GREEN” MATERIALS THAT NEED TO DRY OUT AND SEASON A BIT. I LEAVE THE BAGS OPEN FOR AIR CIRCULATION AND THE PAPER BAGS DISSIPATE THE MOISTURE BETTER THAN PLASTIC WHICH WILL RETAIN IT.

PK 101413 MON 060-900

YOU MUST HAVE LEATHER GLOVES. NOT OTHER KINDS OF GLOVES. YOU WANT FORM FITTING LEATHER.

GO AHEAD, GATHER THOSE BULL THISTLES WITHOUT THEM…

PK 101413 MON 061-900

I LIKE TO HAVE EITHER PAPERWORK OR PHOTOS OR A IDENTIFICATION BOOK WITH ME AS WELL. AND, I HAVE THEM MARKED SPECIFICALLY TO THE PLANTS I’M COLLECTING. I HAVE NEVER BEEN QUESTIONED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT DURING MY “HARVESTINGS” AS I USUALLY HAVE PERMISSION TO COLLECT WHERE I AM TO BEGIN WITH. BUT, “JUST IN CASE…” HAVING THIS MAKES YOU MORE LEGIT, NOT TO MENTION I HAVE PHYRE DOJO CARDS, BOOKLETS AND EVEN BOY SCOUT DEMO STUFF IN THE TRUCK.

PK 101413 MON 063-900

ALSO, NEVER GET OUT OF THE TRUCK AND HARVEST IN AN UNSAFE AREA.

BEST RULE EVER.

SO, I KNOW EXACTLY AND SPECIFICALLY WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR. WHAT STRAIGHTNESS, WHAT DIAMETER SIZES, WHAT SPECIES… THIS IS THE “FIRST TRIAGE.” I ORGANIZE MY HARVESTINGS INTO EASILY GATHERED BUNDLES. I TRY TO REMOVE AS MUCH UNNECESSARY VEGETATION EXCESS FROM THE PLANTS AND SAPLINGS AS I CAN RIGHT THERE AND THEN.

WHEN I TAKE EVERY THING HOME, AS I PROCESS THEM THEY GO THROUGH A “SECOND TRIAGE” WHERE I GET A BETTER AND CLOSER LOOK AT EVERYTHING AS I BREAK THEM DOWN INTO ACTUAL USABLE DEVICES AND PARTS.

HAPPY HARVESTING. (AND, THE PINK BOOTS ARE OPTIONAL.)

*************************************************

BY THE WAY, HERE ARE THE PROCESSED YELLOW MOTH MULLEINS (VERBASCUM BLATTARIA)

THAT YOU SAW I HARVESTED IN THE LAST PHYREKEEPER.

18 INCH SPINDLE STALKS AND PLENTY MORE SEEDS FOR THE PHYREPHARM!

THE (FD) FLY DRILL

IN A PAST LIFE… I WAS A LIFEGUARD. BUT, THAT WAS ONE OF MANY JOBS I HAD THE PLEASURE OF BEING A “JACK OF ALL TRADES” AT. BEFORE THAT, I WAS A BUSBOY AT FRIENDLY’S RESTAURANT WHEN I WAS 15 YEARS OLD AND STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL. FOLLOWING HIGH SCHOOL I DIDN’T GO RIGHT TO COLLEGE, I BECAME A LIFEGUARD AT WHAT ONCE WAS JACK LALANNE’S WHICH THEN BECAME BALLY’S HEALTHCLUBS. IN FACT, MY ONLY REAL COLLEGE WAS NURSING SCHOOL STARTING IN 2001 AT THE RIPE OLD AGE OF 33. I SPENT ALL THOSE YEARS DOING WILDERNESS SKILLS AND MARTIAL ARTS.

SO, I GOT TO SPEND A LOT OF TIME AT THE GYMS. ONE OF THE COMPLICATED WORKOUT TECHNIQUES IS CALLED THE REVERSE CABLE CROSSOVER FLIES. ONE DAY WHILE AT HOME, I WAS THINKING ABOUT THE MANY WAYS THAT YOU COULD POSSIBLY TRANSFER ENERGY IN ORDER TO TURN THE SPINDLE ON A DRILL APPARATUS. WHEN I CAME ACROSS THINKING ABOUT THIS MOVEMENT AND MOTION, I THOUGHT – “I COULD DO THAT! I CAN TRANSLATE THAT TO A PHRYCTION PHYRE TECHNIQUE!”

AND, THE CHALLENGE WAS ON. IN FACT, IT WAS MET, FACED, AND COMPLETED. I HAD TO FIGURE OUT THE STRUCTURE IN ORDER TO FULFILL THE FUNCTION. WHAT WAS I GOING TO USE FOR THE STORED ENERGY SPRING POLES? THEY’RE RATTAN BY THE WAY.

HERE ARE SOME PHOTO GRABS FROM THE HIDEN DENKI DENSHO.

PHYREKEEPER SCHEDULE MEME 900PNEW

Saturday, January 25th, 2014  1pm-3pm
Bowman’s Hill WildFlower Preserve in New Hope, PA

“From Friendly Flowers to Friction Fire”

Native Plants and WildFlowers are great to enjoy in the warmer times of the year. Many of us are aware that many of them have benefits to humanity by also being edible as well as medicinal. But, what about the long winter months? What knowledge and experience can we acquire from standing skeletons? There is also a long forgotten utilitarian use – the science and art of Friction Firemaking. Obviously, the creation and control of Fire was necessary for our thriving across the globe. Join us for a two hour demonstration given by Joseph Lau of every known Friction Fire method from around the world with specimens that are found all around us.

Hands-on experience following demo and handouts.
