PHYREKEEPER 081413 WED 008 - 200W      PHYREKEEPER #0005 PART 1 FOR THURSDAY 08/15/2013

 PHYREKEEPER TITLE PIC900

PHYREKEEPER OPENING MEME

 PHYREKEEPER PROMETHEI 300W

IN MY MANY YEARS OF TEACHING WILDERNESS SKILLS, MARTIAL ARTS AND NURSING, I HAVE CLARIFIED (FOR MYSELF AND MY CHILDREN) WHAT I THINK ARE THE FOUR IMPORTANT, LIFE SUPPORTING, DUTY-ROLES OF HUMANITY.

THE FIRST IS THE PROFILER, OR TRADITIONALLY KNOWN AS THE “SCOUT.” THE PROFILER IS A LIFE SUPPORTING INFORMATION GATHERER AND PROBLEM SOLVER. I FEEL THE PROFILER PRECEDES THE OTHER THREE BECAUSE THE OTHER THREE CANNOT ACT ETHICALLY WITHOUT INFORMATION FIRST.

SECOND, IS THE PROVIDER, OR TRADITIONALLY KNOWN AS THE “HUNTER-GATHERER.” THE PROVIDER SUPPORTS LIFE THROUGH SUSTAINING DAILY LIFE NEEDS TO MAINTAIN BALANCE.

THIRD, IS THE PROTECTOR, OR TRADITIONALLY KNOWN AS THE “WARRIOR.” THE PROTECTOR SUPPORTS LIFE BALANCE BY DEFENDING IT.

LASTLY, IS THE PRESERVER, OR TRADITIONALLY KNOWN AS THE “HEALER.” THE PRESERVER SUPPORTS LIFE BY SAVING LIVES, BRINGING THEM BACK INTO BALANCE.

I HAVE DECIDED TO INCLUDE THESE “BALANCERS” IN THE PHYREKEEPER AS SECTIONS. I EVEN CREATED MEME-LIKE PHOTOS FOR THEM (AND OTHER AREAS AS WELL.) I’LL START WITH PROFILER AND PROVIDER IN PART 1, THEN PROTECTOR AND PRESERVER FOR PART 2. EACH SECTION SHOULD HIGHLIGHT SOME RE-IMAGINED ASPECTS REGARDING THE LIFE SUPPORTING SKILL OF PHRYCTION PHYREKEEPING.

PROMETHEUS, THE FAMOUS HUMANITY CHAMPIONING, GREEK TITAN MYTHOLOGICAL CHARACTER WHOSE NAME MEANS “FORETHOUGHT,”

REMINDS US THAT WE SHOULD NEVER STRAY FROM THE ORIGINAL FUNCTION OF PHYREKEEPING… ETHICALLY SUPPORTING LIFE.

PHYREKEEPER HIGHLIGHTS PART 1-800W

IT’S BEEN AN INTERESTING THREE WEEKS. I MENTIONED A FEW POSTS BACK THAT I WAS GOING TO ATTEND THE MEADOW WALK ON WEDNESDAY MORNING, JULY 31ST, AT BOWMAN’S HILL WILDFLOWER PRESERVE LOCATED JUST SOUTH OF NEW HOPE, PA.

 BOWMANS HILL GROUP

ORIGINALLY SUPPOSED TO BE A HOUR’S TOUR OF THE FRONT MEADOW, IT ENDED UP BEING TWO. LEAD BY “KATHY,” THE SMALL GROUP OF US EACH HAD SOME KNOWLEDGE TO SHARE AND ASSISTED EACH OTHER WITH IDENTIFICATIONS. IT WAS GREAT. IMPORTANTLY, I GOT TO SCOUT OUT NEW PLANTS AND WILDFLOWERS I’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE AS POTENTIAL CANDIDATES FOR FUTURE “PHYREHACKS.” BELOW ARE SOME OF WHAT I SAW THERE THAT I HAVE NEVER SEEN UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL BEFORE.

TURTLEHEAD, PINK (CHELONE LYONII)

GREAT BLUE LOBELIA (LOBELIA SIPHILITICA)

SWAMP ROSE MALLOW (HIBISCUS MOSCHEUTOS)

CONEFLOWER, CUTLEAF (RUDBECKIA LACINIATA)

(BY THE WAY, JUST TO CLARIFY, IT IS A “PRESERVE.”

WHICH MEANS NO PICKING, REMOVING OR COLLECTING.)

IT WAS A $5.00 ADMISSION WHICH INCLUDED THE WALK. FOR MYSELF, IT WAS WORTH MORE THAN THAT BECAUSE I LEARNED A LOT. AS AN ADDED THANK YOU, I DEMONSTRATED AGAIN MY GIANT RAGWEED  (HD) HAND DRILL SPINDLE STALK ON A YUCCA BASE FOR THE STAFF. I LOOK FORWARD TO GOING BACK SOON IN THE FALL TO SEE THE CHANGES. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, CHECK THEM OUT.

I WAS CONTACTED BY A FELLA NAMED JASON. HE WROTE HE WAS HAVING TROUBLE GETTING THE DOGBANE (APOCYNUM) AS A (HD) HAND DRILL SPINDLE STALK TO GO. I SENT HIM A PAIR OF DOGBANE STALKS THAT I HAVE OUT OF MY BUNCH ALONG WITH A SAMPLE OF EVENING PRIMROSE, MUGWORT, AND A FEW OTHERS IN ORDER TO “FEED HIS HABIT” AS HE PUT IT. (WHICH I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND. I AM ALSO PART OF THAT 12 STEP PROGRAM.)

 PHYREKEEPER 081413 WED 005 3-5INW

I’M GLAD TO ASSIST ANYONE AND EVERYONE WANTING TO LEARN PHRYCTION PHYRE. FOR JASON, I ALSO POSTED A SECTION OF MY HIDEN DENKI DENSHO WHICH SHOWS THAT DOGBANE AS A (HD) HAND DRILL SPINDLE CAN BE DONE. IT’S FROM MY “PHYREHACKING” DVD’S. SINCE IT’S THERE, IF YOU WANT TO SEE IT TOO, IT’S HERE:

THAT GIANT WILD LETTUCE (LACTUCA CANADENSIS) YOU SAW MY DAUGHTER ALEXA STANDING NEXT TO IN A PAST BLOG POSTING FELL OVER IN A RAINSTORM. AND NOT ONLY THAT, A DEER ATE ALL THE LEAVES AND SEEDHEAD OFF OF IT! SO, I ENDED UP CUTTING IT EARLY AND STORING IT IN MY SHED. THE DIAMETER AT THE BASE IS LARGE ENOUGH FOR A LATER (PS) PHYRE SAW.

 WILD LETTUCE 02

I ORDERED AND RECEIVED CHICORY (CICHORIUM) AND DAISY FLEABANE (ERIGERON) SEEDS IN THE MAIL TO BE PLANTED IN THE UPCOMING “PHYREFIELD GARDEN” (AKA MY BACKYARD.)

 PHYREKEEPER 081413 WED 004 3-5INW

HERE IS A PHOTO OF MY BACKYARD FROM THE SOUTHEAST CORNER FACING NORTHWEST. OUR LOT IS ONE ACRE. THAT’S A LOT OF UNUSED LAWN. THIS’LL BE THE NEW PHYREFIELD GARDEN TO BE PREPARED THIS EARLY WINTER AND STARTING NEXT YEAR. YOU CAN JUST MAKE OUT THE BLUE SHED, THE RED SHED AND THE RANCH HOUSE FROM LEFT TO RIGHT.

PHYREKEEPER PROFILER SCOUT

AGAIN, THE PROFILER, OR SCOUT IS A LIFE SUPPORTING INFORMATION GATHERER AND PROBLEM SOLVER. SO, IN THE NATURE OF THAT ROLE AND DUTY WE’RE GOING TO DO A CHALLENGE.

WHAT IS THIS NEW JERSEY TREE?

BLOG PICS ETC 072713 SAT 038 5INW

IT’S HARD TO SEE, BUT THE FLOWERS ARE PINK AND WHITE.

FIRST PERSON TO EMAIL ME WITH THE CORRECT FULL LATIN NAME AT INFO@PHYREDOJO.COM WILL WIN A (HD) HAND DRILL KIT. IT INCLUDES SPINDLE STALK, BASE BOARD, TINDER AND BAMBOO TUBE PROTECTIVE CASE.

I WILL REVEAL IN THE AUGUST PHYREKEEPER PART 2 WHAT IT IS, WHO WON, AND I’LL HAVE A DEMONSTRATION VIDEO ON YOUTUBE SHOWING THE MYSTERY MATERIAL AS THE “PHYREHACK OF THE MONTH.” THE WINNER GETS TO CHOOSE WHICH SPINDLE STALK THEY WANT FROM MY COLLECTION. I WILL GUARANTEE THAT IT IS A FUNCTIONAL SET BEFORE IT IS MAILED OUT. THE PHOTO BELOW IS ONLY A SMALL PORTION OF WHAT I HAVE IN STORAGE.

THE TALLER ONES ARE 24 INCHES AND THE SHORTER ONES ARE 18 INCHES LONG. FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: SNEEZEWEED (HELENIUM AUTUMNALE), GIANT RAGWEED (AMBROSIA TRIFIDA), CATTAIL (TYPHA), YUCCA (YUCCA), COCKLEBUR (XANTHIUM STUMARIUM), EVENING PRIMROSE (OENOTHERA), PRICKLY LETTUCE (LACTUCA SERRIOLA), MUGWORT (ARTEMISIA VULGARIS), AND TEASEL (DIPSACUS).

SOME GREAT UNASKED FOR ADVICE I WISH SOMEONE HAD TOLD ME:

— ALWAYS USE A PERMANENT MARKER TO CORRECTLY IDENTIFY ALL OF YOUR MATERIALS. NEVER THINK YOU’RE GOING TO REMEMBER WHAT IT IS WHEN IT GETS SEPARATED FROM THE BUNCH. WRITE THAT NAME ON THE BOTTOM ¼ OF THE SPINDLE STALK (OR ELSEWHERE IF NOT A DRILL METHOD). THAT LEAVES ROOM FOR THE SPINDLE TO BURN DOWN AND SO YOUR HANDS OR STRING DON’T RUB OFF THE MARKER.

— DO YOUR BEST TO RECORD YOUR SUCCESSES AND FAILS (I CALL THEM “PHAYLES.”) A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS. TAKE AN INDEX CARD AND WRITE THE METHOD (I.E. (HD) HAND DRILL, (PD) PUMP DRILL, ETC.), EACH OF THE MATERIALS USED, THE DATE AND TIME, SUCCESS OR “PHAYLE,” HOW MANY ATTEMPTS, TECHNIQUE LESSON(S) LEARNED. PLACE THIS CARD NEXT TO THE SET (WITH THE COAL-EMBER IF A SUCCESS) AND TAKE A PHOTO OR PHOTOS. HAVE YOUR CARD AND PEN READY TO WRITE. AND, A VIDEO IS BEST. EXPLAIN WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND WHAT IS THE LESSON. AND, SAY ALL THE THINGS THAT WOULD BE ON THE CARD. MAYBE, FILL OUT A CARD ANYWAY AND ADD IT TO THE VIDEO. IN MY VIDEOS, I LIKE TO SUBTITLE EVERYTHING FOR CLARITY.

— KEEP A JOURNAL RECORD, OF YOUR RECORDINGS. BEFORE YOU KNOW IT YOU’VE BUILT UP A LIST OF METHODS/TECHNIQUES AND MATERIALS AS SCIENTIFIC PROOF FOR YOURSELF AND OTHERS OF WHAT CAN BE DONE!

 PHYREKEEPER PROVIDER MEME 300W

IT’S HERE IN THIS SECTION CALLED THE PROVIDER, THAT I WILL POST MY HARVESTINGS OR SALVAGINGS OF PHRYCTION PHYRE MATERIALS.

1) POISON HEMLOCK (CONIUM MACULATUM) – ALONG RT. 31 NORTH BETWEEN CLINTON AND FLEMINGTON NEW JERSEY, THERE’S A SMALL TRIBE OF TALL AND STRAIGHT POISON HEMLOCKS. I’M GOING TO BE USING THESE IN A FUTURE PHYREHACK. I COLLECTED THE SEEDHEADS FOR THE “PHYREFIELD” GARDEN AS WELL AS THE STALKS. STRAIGHT STALKS WERE TRIMMED TO 24 INCH, 18 INCH AND SMALLER SECTIONS. THEY ARE FRAGILE, HOLLOW STALKS WITHOUT PITH.

2) I “HAD” TO DO A SALVAGE OPERATION ON RT 31 SOUTHBOUND BEFORE FLEMINGTON, NJ. WHAT YOU’RE SEEING IS A GUARDRAIL THAT HAS JUST BEEN CLEARED BY A MOWER THE DAY BEFORE. I HAD BEEN SCOUTING THIS GUARDRAIL FOR MONTHS. IT HAD AN INCREDIBLE COLLECTION OF THISTLES, MOTH MULLEINS, MULLEINS AND SOME ESPECIALLY HUGE WHITE SWEET CLOVERS. I HAD TO SEE WHAT COULD BE SAVED.

 RT 31 SOUTH HARVEST 080613 TUE 001 4INW

I WAS ABLE TO SALVAGE: TWO MOTH MULLEINS (VERBASCUM BLATTARIA) WITH SEEDHEADS, ONE TEASEL (DIPSACUS), TWO BRANCHES OF BOX ELDER (ACER NEGUNDO) TREE, SOME SECTIONS OF PAULOWNIA (PAULOWNIA TOMENTOSA) TREE,…

THREE BULL THISTLES (CIRCIUM VULGARE) WITH SEEDHEADS,

EIGHTEEN MULLEINS (VERBASCUM THAPSUS) WITH SEEDHEADS…

RT 31 SOUTH HARVEST 080613 TUE 025 4INW

AND FINALLY, 18 CURVED STALKS AND 21 STRAIGHT STALKS OF

WHITE SWEET CLOVER (MELILOTUS ALBUS.)

RT 31 SOUTH HARVEST 080613 TUE 029 4INW

3) I HARVESTED SOME TREE OF HEAVEN (AILANTHUS ALTISSIMA) SEEDS FOR THE FUTURE “PHYREFIELD” GARDEN. FOR MY “NATIVE PLANT” FRIENDS WHO MAY FINE THE PURPOSEFUL PLANTING OF AN INVASIVE SPECIES HORRIFYING, THESE WILL ONLY BE GROWING TO THE HEIGHT OF A FEW FEET FOR SPINDLE STALKS AND THEN HARVESTED. THEY WON’T EVEN HAVE TIME TO SEED.OR SPREAD. THEY ARE NOW DRYING IN MY SHED IN A CARDBOARD BOX.

AILANTHUS SEEDS

4) NEAR EXIT 7 OFF OF RT. 78 WEST, I HARVESTED THREE SUMAC (RHUS) SAPLINGS ABOUT ½ INCH IN DIAMETER AT THE BASE. THESE ARE GOING TO MAKE SOME GREAT SPINDLES. I’M GOING TO GO BACK TO BACK TO THIS TRIBE OF SUMACS IN THE WINTER WHEN THE MILKY SAP IS LOW AND COMPARE THEM TOGETHER TO SEE IF THERE IS A REAL DIFFERENCE. THEY ARE DRYING IN MY SHED.

SUMAC 3IN W

5) ON EXIT 50 OFF OF RT 55 NORTH, I HARVESTED SOME WHITE FLOWERED MOTH MULLEINS (VERBASCUM BLATTARIA.) THEY HAVE AMAZING SEEDPODS WHICH WILL ALSO BE USED FOR “PHYREFIELD.”

 WHITE MOTH MULLEIN

WHITE MOTH MULLEIN 02

WHITE MOTH MULLEIN 03

6) ALONG THE FIELD AT HERITAGE PARK LOCATED IN ASBURY, NJ, I HARVESTED SOME ECHINACEA TO SEE IF THESE STALKS HAVE ENOUGH SURFACE AREA TO FUNCTION FOR A PHRYCTION PHYREHACK. SPINDLE STALKS AT OR UNDER ¼ INCH ARE DIFFICULT TO IMPOSSIBLE. SO, AFTER THEY’RE DONE SHRINKING AFTER DRYING, WE’LL SEE… THESE WERE THE LARGEST ONES I COULD FIND. THE BUNDLE OF SPINDLE STALKS ARE ON THE LOWER LEFT. THE LARGEST DIAMETERS AT THE BASES ARE JUST UNDER 3/8 THS OF AN INCH TO ¼ INCH.

ECHINACEA 01

ECHINACEA 02

7) I HARVESTED ALL THE PRICKLY LETTUCES (LACTUCA SERRIOLA) ON OUR PROPERTY. I GOT SOME GREAT 24 INCH, 18 INCH AND LARGER DIAMETER SHORTER SPINDLES. I COLLECTED THEM EARLIER THAN I WOULD HAVE LIKED. I PREFER PLANTS TO DIE ON THEIR OWN AND THEN HARVEST. THEY’RE DRYING IN THE SHED, BUNDLED ACCORDING TO THEIR SIZES.

PHYREKEEPER PHYREPUNK MOD MEME 300W

THE TEACHINGS OF THE PHYRE DOJO ARE BASED ON EMPIRICALLY BASED EVIDENCE IN SCIENTIFIC METHOD. IF IT DOESN’T WORK, I FIND OUT WHY IT IS NOT IN BALANCE AND HOW IT IS CORRECTED IN ORDER TO OBTAIN A LIFE SUPPORTING PHRYCTION PHYRE. THIS IS THE ORIGINAL AND SOLE FUNCTION OF PHRYCTION PHYRE – TO PREVENT SUFFERING AND DEATH.

FROM MY NURSING TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE, IT IS BASED ON UNDERSTANDING THE SCIENCE OF ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY. OR, IN OTHER WORDS, STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION. IN MY TEACHING AND TRAINING, IT IS MY FINDING THAT WHAT LIES BETWEEN STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION THAT IS VITAL TO EXCELLING IT FROM SCIENCE TO ART FORM. WHAT IS BETWEEN STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION ARE THE VARIABLES. VARIABLES ARE THINGS THAT ARE THE SAME THEME BUT PHYSICALLY MANIFEST DIFFERENTLY.

THE PHYRE DOJO HAS CLARIFIED 22 VARIABLES THAT MAKE UP LIFE SUPPORTING PHRYCTION PHYRE. IT IS IN “PLAYING” WITH THESE VARIABLES THAT WE PUSH THE ENVELOPE OF LEARNING AND UNDERSTANDING PHRYCTION PHYRE AS AN ART FORM.

INSPIRED BY THE SCIENCE FICTION GENRE OF “STEAMPUNK,” I HAVE RE -IMAGINED PHRYCTION PHYRE AS “PHYREPUNK.” IN STEAMPUNK, WHEN ONE CREATES OR “MODIFIES” AN OBJECT INTO A STEAMPUNK FASHION, IT’S CALLED “MODDING.” THE ART OF ALTERING AND MODIFYING PHRYCTION PHYRE METHODS AND TECHNIQUES BLURRING THE LINES OF PRIMITIVE AND MODERN I CALL “PHYREMOD.” I ALSO CALL THE “CIVILIZED VARIATIONS” BECAUSE THEY WERE CREATED/DISCOVERED IN A “DOJO” AND NOT IN “MOTHER NATURE.”

THIS MONTH’S PHYREPUNK/PHYREMOD HIGHLIGHT IS WHAT I CALL (AD) ALEXA’S DRILL (NAMED AFTER MY DAUGHTER ALEXA WHO YOU’VE SEEN IN PAST POSTS.

ONE OF THE CHALLEGES I HAD TO ACCEPT WAS GETTING MY (AT THE TIME) 8 YEAR OLD SON AND 4 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER TO GET THEY’RE OWN PHRYCTION PHYRE COAL-EMBERS (THEY ARE NOW ELEVEN AND SEVEN YEARS OLD.)

HERE IS ALEXA WITH HER FIRST COAL-EMBER ON MARCH 11TH, 2011 WHEN SHE WAS 4 YEARS OLD.

 ALEXA1stCOAL B 4INW

ALEXA1stCOAL D 4INW

THE PHYREMOD I BUILT FOR ALEXA WAS BASED ON A MODEL I HAD ALREADY WORKED ON AND COMPLETED WHICH I CALL THE (LD) LATHE DRILL. IT IS BASED ON THE PRIMITIVE SPRING POLE LATHE DESIGN OF OLD WOODWORKERS WHO DID WOODTURNING. (AD) ALEXA’S DRILL WOULD BE A SMALLER, MORE COMPACT AND SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO HER HEIGHT AND WEIGHT. AND, SHE WANTED IT TO BE COLORED PINK – BECAUSE IT WAS HER’S. AND, OF COURSE, I COMPLIED.

A YEAR AND TWO MONTHS LATER, WE RECREATED THAT ENDEAVOUR FOR THE HIDEN DENKI DENSHO MEDIA SERIES FOR THE “PHYREPUNK-PHYREMOD” SECTION. WE EVEN GOT HER PINK SHIRT FROM THAT DAY WHICH SAYS, “DADDY’S LITTLE MONKEY.” BELOW ARE SOME SCREEN PHOTO GRABS FROM THE HDD SERIES.

PHYREPUNKING – MODDING AND PHYREHACKING KEEP PHRYCTION PHYRE ALIVE BEYOND THE FOUNDATIONAL BASICS WHICH I CALL THE “PRIMAL 8 BASICS.” IT’S LIKE GOING FROM PLAYING THE “SCALES” TO PLAYING “JAZZ.” I HAVE SOME FUN WITH THIS AND JACOB’S VIDEOS. I TURNED THEM INTO “MUSIC VIDEOS” TO KEEP IT LIGHT AND A LITTLE DIFFERENT. LET’S KEEP GOING!
