Hello Global Tribe of PhyreKeepers (GTOP)!

01/31/2020 – Before we begin, I’m happy to announce that Taku Kawaguchi and I have clarified our dates for Nagano, Japan! Saturday/Sunday, October 3/4, 2020! As usual, I will go over EVERY KNOWN METHOD IN THE WORLD, (and then some…) Taku Kawaguchi is THE name in Bushcrafting in Japan. He can be found at (www.WildAndNative.com). We have been teaching together for over 20 years now…

Our 5th Vlog opens with Phyre Dojo’s “Primal Basic #2″ (PB2): The (MD) Mouth Drill. This is the 3 piece version, or it WOULD be except that for demo purposes, I use RELOADS for time and convenience for public showings.

In our last VLOG #0004, I said I was going to do my best to post a “PhyreHack.” A PhyreHack is when you use a material unused before by either yourself and/or others. When I was in Quebec, Canada with LES PRIMITIFS (www.LesPrimitifs.ca) Saturday/Sunday, January 11-12th, 2020, I decided to demonstrate LIVE – what I do when I “PhyreHack.” I had decided to not only bring a version of the (MD) Mouth Drill for demo’ing, I made it entire out of a wood that I not only have NEVER used before, but is a harder, denser wood on the Janka Hardness Scale. This tree wood should usually ONLY be considered for (BD) Bow Drill, NOT a (MD) Mouth Drill! (Again, the Atlantic White Cedar (BD) Bow Drill you might have made and 1st learned on is a Janka Hardness of ONLY 350.)

I made this particular (MD) Mouth Drill Set out of HACKBERRY (Celtis Occidentalis). (The name is both a coincidence and appropriate!) It’s rated on the Janka Hardness Scale at 880 (lbs.)! In the last VLOGS, I mentioned that Phyre Dojo’s (HD) Mand Drills are 3/8″, 7/16″ and 1/2″. These are Phyre Dojo’s Standardization Measurements for (HD) Hand Drills. For (MD) Mouth Drills however (including the  (MTD) Mouth Toggle Drill and (MBD) Mouth Bow Drill Variations), Phyre Dojo’s Standardization Measurements are: “5/8”. This means the Spindle and Reloads are 5/8″ in Diameter. SPOILER ALERT: Phyre Dojo’s Standardization Measurements for (BD) Bow Drill, (PD) Pump Drill, (ED) Egyptian Drill, (CD) Crutch Drill and (TD) Toggle Drill –  RELOAD DIAMETERS (not all Spindle Diameters)…. are 3/4″. So,… (MD) Mouth Drills are are a LARGER DIAMETER than (HD) Hand Drills and a SMALLER DIAMETER than the other Drills.

If you consider yourself (or are on your way to being) a serious PhyreKeeper, HONESTLY answer this question to yourself:

How many times have I passed a branch that was too thick for (HD) Hand Drill and too thin for (BD) Bow Drill?”

To the right is the video of THAT 1st PHYREHACK in front of >20 people learning Phryction PhyreKeeping. I told them I had never used this material before and I had no idea whether it was going to work or not… But, I wanted them to see that EXPERIMENTATION & “PHAYLURES” are how you train, learn and grow. Phryction PhyreKeeping is S.T.E.A.M. after all…

I wish to personally thank Mathieu Hebert of Les Primitifs for videoing this for me. I had brought my video camera, but when I start transmiting /teaching/training, I forget EVERYTHING else practically… It is VERY IMPORTANT to me that these moments are archived. This is S.T.E.A.M. after all…

Below is a more detailed video explaination on the Phyre Dojo’s YouTube Channel on WHY (MD) Mouth Drill is an IMPORTANT Method to know and perform in your “bag of tricks.” There are also a few more random (MD) Mouth Drill videos there. And , as much as I myself hate commercials, my Online Course not only clarifies MANY of (MD) Mouth Drill’s Variables and Variations, but also EVERY SINGLE KNOWN METHOD ON THE PLANET… If you desire a ready to go and functional (MD) Mouth Drill Set, I’m on the other end on my email…

So, welcome to Phyre Dojo’s “Primal Basic #2!” The (MD) Mouth Drill.

There is a Universe of many other Methods (Basics) waiting for you to Discover and Explore…

Still VERY busy trying to update my PhyreDojo site and fulfilling Orders while making these VLOGS and Balancing Life in general…
